ABOUT THE BUTTERFLY
The Peacock Butterfly is one of the most easily recognized and best-known species, with its spectacular pattern of eyespots, which is how it gets its name. They feed on the nectar of many garden plants in late summer, in particular the buddleia and echinacea, as features in this painting. The caterpillars are black and covered short shiny black spines, and eat the leaves of stinging nettles.
