About

Hi there, I'm Craig Austin. I enjoy painting a wide range of wildlife and coastal themed subjects, capturing my chosen subjects in meticulous detail. With my grounding in Scientific Illustration, I still use the same observation and drawing skills to now create accurate and colourful framed art.

I paint mainly in acrylic - on board, canvas or paper, whichever best suits the size and subject matter. Reference material comes from my own photography much of the time, or from my large library of books. I only sell hand painted originals, and currently do not supply prints of my work.

CAREER SUMMARY

I started my career as a freelance illustrator in the mid 1980’s, after studying Scientific Illustration at Middlesex Polytechnic, London. The college was in fact one of the few places in the country that offered this type of specialist course, and originated from the renowned Hornsey College of Art, which merged with the Poly in the 1970s.

As a professional illustrator, I produced work for a wide range of sectors over the years, including; wildlife illustrations for publishing, commercial art for advertising, and hyper-realistic fruit & food paintings for packaging. I worked on many high profile brands for marketing agencies in London. This was back in the 'old days' when everything was drawn by hand, before the digital age took over! My preferred field and passion however was for wildlife, and I created scientific illustrations for numerous books, magazines and stamps.

In 2001, I decided to have a break from the illustration business and retrained to start a new career as a Web Designer. After a few years of working for design and multimedia companies, I went into partnership and setup a web design & marketing company. After 15 years of successfully running the business, I retired from the web industry completely, and moved to Cornwall to begin painting again.

Latest - I've now moved again and living in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales! I'm semi-retired, but still work part-time in my studio producing a selection of wildlife and coastal themed paintings.
