ABOUT THE BUMBLE BEE
The buff-tailed bumblebee featured in this print, is the largest of the bumblebees and are found in lowland areas. They are social insects and form small colonies of 50 individuals in a nest with a single queen. ABOUT THE LADYBIRD
The seven spot ladybird, or common ladybug, is a carnivorous beetle with familiar black-on-red markings.  They are a gardeners friend as both adults and larvae eat insects, particularly aphids. Adults overwinter in ground litter and under tree bark, in gardens and parks. Their bright colours help to warn potential predators of their distastefulness, and they will also exude a yellow substance when attacked.

The painted lady butterfly featured in this print, is a long-distance migrant. It spreads northwards from the Middle East, North Africa, and central Asia, recolonising mainland Europe and reaching Great Britain and Ireland. This beautiful orange and black butterfly regularly frequents gardens and other flowery places in late summer. The painted lady is also known as the thistle butterfly, because thistle plants are its favourite nectar plant for food, and for its caterpillar.

The Peacock Butterfly is one of the most easily recognized and best-known species, with its spectacular pattern of eyespots, which is how it gets its name. They feed on the nectar of many garden plants in late summer, in particular the buddleia and echinacea, as featured in this painting. Stag beetles are spectacular insects, with the male measuring up to 7.5cm and having large jaws that just like the antlers of a stag. They spend most of their life underground as larvae, up to six years, feeding on decaying plant material. Once it undergoes metamorphosis, the larva hatches to becomes a stag beetle.
