ABOUT THE BLUE TIT
A popular garden bird, the blue tit can be spotted at bird tables and feeders, as well as parks and woodlands. They eat a range of insects, caterpillars, and seeds, and in winter, they flock together with other tit species to search for food. They nest in holes in trees and walls, and also frequently use nest boxes, where they lay between 10 and 12 eggs in a single clutch.

ABOUT THE CHOUGH
The Chough, or Cornish Chough as it is commonly known in the UK, have black plumage and brightly coloured scarlet legs and bills, and are found in mountains and rocky sea-cliffs. They feed on short grazed grassland, eating mainly invertebrate prey such as leatherjackets and beetle larvae, and occasionally vegetable material. With their long broad wings they perform spectacular aerobatics.

Gannets are large birds with bright white bodies and black wingtips. At sea they glide low over the water, and feed by flying high and circling before plunging into the sea to catch fish. They dive from heights of 30 metres, they can hit the water at speeds of up to 60mph.

ABOUT THE GOLDCREST
The Goldcrest is the UK’s smallest bird, greyish-green in colour with a pale belly and a black and yellow stripe on their heads. They prefer coniferous and mixed woodland, but can also be found in gardens and parks with large trees. Its Latin name, Regulus regulus, also refers to its crown and means ‘petty king’ or ‘prince’.

ABOUT THE MORKPORK
The morepork, also know as the ruru, is a small brown owl species found in New Zealand. Like most owls this species is generally nocturnal, roosting in secluded spots branches of trees, in particular the dracophylum traverssi tree, which features in this painting. It makes a call in the evening that sounds like the word “morkpork”, hence the unsual name. It feeds on small vertebrates and larger insects, hunting by pouncing on them from tree perches.

The Wren is a tiny brown bird, round in shape with a fine bill, very short round wings and a short, narrow tail. Wrens can be found in woodland, farmland, heathland and gardens. It’s the most common UK breeding bird, and for such a small bird, it has a remarkably loud voice. Wrens are primarily insectivorous, eating insects, spiders and other small invertebrates.
